Meet At: Uni boatsheds, Foreman St West Beach
AUMC will run the first kayak skills session for 2019 on Monday 11 March (this long weekend). You will learn basic skills like paddling forwards and backwards, turning, stopping, support strokes, capsizes and simple rescues. These skills are essential if you want to use the AUMC kayaks in the future or go on a kayak day trip. Please read ALL the details below before registering.
Don’t worry about the weather – there is a slight chance of showers, but we plan to get wet anyway and it is only a short training course.
As this day is skills based you will get wet, so bring a towel and change of clothes. The club will supply kayaks, paddles and spraydecks, PFDs, and any other equipment required. You will need to bring and wear suitable clothing, which includes bathers, shorts or leggings (not jeans), a long sleeved synthetic top or rashie, thermal top if you get cold, old sandshoes or boatshoes that can get wet, sunscreen, hat, water bottle, snacks and maybe your camera in a waterproof bag. A light rain jacket is good to keep off the wind. Cotton t-shirts are not suitable as they become heavy and cold when wet, also thongs, crocs or sandals are useless – they fall off in the water.
We will meet at the West Beach Boat Shed at 9am, pack up the trailer, then head up to the launch point together. We should be back there by 1.30pm. You may also be able to meet at the Cloisters at 8.30am if you need transport. Please notify this in your registration, and also let me know if you have a car, and can transport people from the cloisters or from West Beach.
If you want to catch a bus, the J1 leaves stop V2 on Currie St south side at 8.21am, arriving stop 14 Tapleys Hill Rd east side at 8.48 am, then just walk through to the boatsheds. Bus H30 leaves the same stop at 8.17am, heading for Glenelg. Get off at Stop 4 Henley Beach Rd, change to J1, get off at stop 14 as above and walk through to the boat sheds. One of us will give you a ride back to the city afterwards.
Cost will be $5.-. You can pay this on the day or as a $5 trip deposit via the Blacks website – access here: https://www.theblacks.com.au/Clubs/Mountain
PS: THIS TRIP IS NOW FULL AND REGISTRATIONS HAVE BEEN CLOSED. THERE WILL BE MORE OPPORTUNITIES SOON. IF YOU WANT TO BE ON A WAITING LIST PLEASE EMAIL firstname.lastname@example.org
