Uni boat sheds West Beach
Meet At: Boat Shed
This is a kayak day trip to explore the mangroves and ships graveyard near Garden Island. Dolphins are common in this area.
We will meet at the West Beach Boat Shed at 9am, and should be back there by about 4pm. If you have to catch a bus the J1H leaves stop V2 on Currie St south side at 8.10am, arriving stop 14 Tapleys Hill Rd east side at 8.41am, then just walk through to the boatsheds. Cost will be approx $4 for petrol money – you can pay this on the day.
Please let me know when you register whether you have a car and can take passengers from the boat shed, or if you need transport.
Bring your lunch in a waterproof bag (2 ziplock bags is best) and some snacks and a water bottle, as you get hungry kayaking and there are no shops. Bring a camera or phone, but only if you have something waterproof to keep it in. Also needed: towel and change of clothes for afterwards. There are toilets but no showers.
You will need to wear suitable boating clothes. This includes old sandshoes or boat shoes which can get wet – no thongs or crocks, and leave the socks home. A longsleeved shirt (synthetic) to shed water and protect from sunburn is good, also comfortable shorts or trackpants, shady hat, sunglasses if you like, sunscreen and mosquito repellant. If you get cold a light spray jacket will keep the wind off, and a thermal top or fleece can also be good in cooler weather.
AUMC will supply kayaks, paddles, spraydecks and some drybags for keeping your lunch in. You are required to wear a PFD – we supply these as well. This trip is for people who have been kayaking before.
Please do not book for this event if you have not done basic skills with AUMC. This wastes everyone’s time. You must have demonstrated competency first to be eligible for this trip.
