Uni boat sheds West Beach

Organiser: Jane Boroky
Meet At: Uni boatsheds, Foreman St West Beach
Cost: $5

This is a training event for new AUMC kayakers. You will learn basic skills like paddling forwards and backwards, turning, stopping,  support strokes, capsizes and simple rescues. These skills are essential if you want to use the AUMC kayaks in the future or go on a kayak  day trip.

As this day is skills based you will get wet, so bring a towel and change of clothes. The club will supply kayaks, paddles and spraydecks, PFDs, and any other equipment required. You will need to bring your lunch and suitable clothing, which includes bathers, shorts or leggings (not jeans), a long sleeved synthetic top or rashie, thermal top if you get cold, old sandshoes or boatshoes, sunscreen, hat, water bottle, snacks and maybe your camera in a waterproof bag. Cotton t-shirts are not suitable as they become heavy and cold when wet, also thongs, crocs or sandals are not recommended.

During this event you may have the chance to complete a stage of the PaddleOz program, which is accredited by Australian Canoeing http://paddleoz.canoe.org.au/ . To complete a whole level of the program will mean attending at least one more AUMC event.

We will meet at the Uni boat sheds, Foreman St West Beach and pack up the trailer, then head up to the launch point together. You may be able to catch the bus from the citiy if you need transport. Please notify this in your registration, and also let me know if you have a car, and can transport people from the boat sheds to the launch spot.

The best bus to catch is the J1H leaving stop V2 on Currie St South side at 8.10am and arriving Tapleys Hill Rd Stop 14 East side at 8.41am, then walk through to the University boatsheds next to the Hockey grounds.

Any questions, give me a call!
