Organiser: Jonathan Gobin
Meet At: Uni Cloisters
Cost: $60-$70 estimated
I’m running a kayak trip to Glenelg River (mostly in South West Victoria apart from a short stretch through SA), traveling approximately 50km of river over 3 days, starting from either Pines Landing or Moleside and ending near the river mouth at Nelson. We’ll be carrying all of our camping gear, food etc. in the kayaks.
This section of river is mostly limestone gorge, surrounded by dense bushland and plenty of wildlife. It’s an ideal summer trip, as all the campsites have reliable water and if it gets warm we can cool off by going for a swim.
It’s a fairly easy trip and a good introduction to flat water touring, but some prior kayaking experience is necessary. In particular, you’ll need to be able to paddle, steer and stop ok, and have practiced a wet exit at least once. We’re expecting to be paddling for not much more than 4 hours a day if we’re going at an easy but steady pace. If you haven’t been on a kayak trip with me before or are not sure about your skill level then let me know and I’ll probably organise a time to take you out for a quick paddle before the trip.
We’ll be taking AUMC’s kayaks but there’s only a limited number available so I’d suggest registering early if you’re keen. It’s also a good idea to let me know in advance if you need to reserve any camping gear.
We might also need an extra car for this trip so please let me know if you’re able to drive and take a few passengers. It’s a bit over 5 hours drive and we’ll probably drive part way on Thursday evening so that we can get an earlyish start.
Trip cost is estimated to be $60-$70 per person for fuel and camping fees.
